Time to get this show on the road! Before I start I should state that neither of my normal editors (James or Elizabeth), have seen this blog in any way, shape or form. Not in a draft format, or the finished content. So, any butchery of the written English language that results in this blog is purely of my own doing. 😃

I said that for my 50th year I would try at least one new "thing" each month. Could be a restaurant, an activity, a museum, etc. I solicited ideas through social media, plus came up with a few of my own. One idea was sky diving, which I will do sometime this summer, its a tad cold outside at the moment, because as I am plummeting to earth I would at least like to be warm. The ideas ranged from get my motorcycle license (not likely) to staying in a haunted house (the resort that inspired Stephen King to write The Shining is in Colorado, I suspect I would be staying by myself as Flory would ditch me).

So, for January, I went to my first Coffee with the Curator at the Pres. Benjamin Harrison house. The concept here is that based on the topic, the curator brings out artifacts from the Harrison collection and talks about their history. This month was Bling in the New Year, so it was artifacts that contained precious metals. I am also on track to become a Docent at the Benjamin Harrison house!

There are several medals and walking sticks (he collected them, maybe I should take that up!) on display. The medal in the glass case was a gift from the Columbian Exposition in 1892 (celebrating 400th anniversary of Columbus' trip). There were three medals created, one gold, one silver and oneb bronze. The gold medal was presented to Harrison, the silver one resides in Spain and the bronze one is in a private collection. On a side note (I do get off track quite often), this was also known as the Chicago Worlds Fair. There is a great book called The Devil in the White City that describes the creation of the worlds fair and the activities of the serial killer H. H. Holmes who was active in Chicago during the time of the Chicago Worlds Fair.

The other thing I have planned for January is  blacksmithing lessons at Connor Prairie. These start at the end of the month and go for 6 weeks. This seemed like a natural activity to try considering, like most people, I do have a coal forge in the shed in my back yard, seriously.

I am still looking for more ideas as I move through the year. The more the merrier, it should be a fun year. I will try to do two things: let you know my plans ahead of time in case you want to join me, and recap with pictures/videos so you see how it turned out.

February will include some skiing. I have been skiing in the past, but it was 30 years ago, on the tallest mountain in Germany, without lessons... It did not go well, but I kept at it and eventually made it down the hill with all my gear and no injuries. Hopefully this one will work out better
